2022 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2021 Toyota Highlander

2022 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2021 Toyota Highlander

Anyone considering a midsize crossover with three rows as their next vehicle purchase or lease has a lot of excellent choices. Two of those options are the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, which has recently arrived at Lokey Nissan, and the 2021 Toyota Highlander. The Pathfinder is a particularly intriguing option because it has been completely redesigned for this model year and is thus one of the newest platforms on the market. It boasts a sleek exterior, a new transmission and loads of standard and available features. The Highlander, on the other hand, was redesigned a couple of years ago, and it is known for its cargo space, amenities and handling, which are all areas in which the Nissan model also fares quite well.

Interior - 2022 Nissan Pathfinder

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder can seat either seven or eight passengers. The Highlander seats seven and does not provide the option of the eighth seat. It is also important to note that the total passenger volume of the Nissan is quite a bit larger: 148.0 vs 136.1 cubic feet. This results in more front legroom—44.3 vs 42.0—and substantially more front headroom: 42.3 vs 38.4. In fact, the Pathfinder has more headroom in all three rows. The Toyota model does provide more legroom in the second row, and the vehicles are similar when it comes to the third row. Nissan also manages a tad more dedicated cargo space—16.6 vs 16.0 cubic feet—but the numbers are similar when folding the rear seating.

The Pathfinder has a 3.5-liter V6, and performance has been improved over the outgoing model by 24 horses. Nissan has also opted to drop the CVT automatic for a more traditional nine-speed automatic transmission. The CVT was originally chosen for its fuel performance, but Nissan managed to get the nine-speed in line with those numbers. Nissan has also made improvements that allow for a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. Toyota also opts for a 3.5-liter V6. It pairs it to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both automakers offer front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional. Both vehicles also feature trailer-sway control as standard equipment. However, when properly equipped, the Highlander maxes out at a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

When it comes to technologies and safety features, Nissan and Toyota are both heavyweights, and that makes the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2021 Toyota Highlander comparison fun. Both come standard with an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and offer a larger touchscreen as an option. Standard features in both cases include a rearview camera system and Android and Apple device integration. Options in both cases include in-dash navigation, Wi-Fi, wireless charging and a 360-degree camera system. Both the 2021 Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder come with a standard suite of driver-assistance technologies, and these suites are highly comparable as well. One area where Nissan distinguishes itself is the optional ProPILOT Assist tech. It provides a semi-autonomous driving mode, and Toyota does not yet offer an adaptive cruise control system that sophisticated for the Highlander.
